The AEX-index seems to benefit from the positive quarter results Dutch companies recently presented, although some critical notes were made.

The AEX (Amsterdam Exchange Index) contains the 25 biggest and most traded stocks on the Amsterdam market. The heavyweights within the AEX for years are Unilever and Royal Dutch Shell which count for approximately 15% of the total index. After that comes ING (11.81%) and ASML (9.08%). These stocks are together good for approximately 50% of the total AEX and therefore could have a big influence on the index.

A recent research report from Dialogic for the Dutch government shows that the Dutch businesses have strengthens their competitive position thanks to collaboration.According to deputy minister of economic affairs Henk Kamp, the so called ‘top sector’ approach seems to be effective, because the Netherlands is the number one innovator within the European Union at this moment and is also the third most competition powered economy in the world.

At the same time Kamp also makes a critical note about the future resistance of the Dutch economy. In a recent
interview with the newspaper ‘Het Algemeen Dagblad’ the deputy minister claims that EUR 1 billion extra is necessary for research and innovation. According to Kamp it is also necessary to invest more in the further growth of airport Schiphol.

The AEX-index is often viewed as a reflection of the Dutch economy, but the composition does not only exist
anymore of pure Dutch companies. For example Altice and Gemalto are also listed in the index and although their headquarters are located in the Netherlands, their activities take place in other countries.

The past period the AEX was especially pushed by predominately positive quarter results of the companies that are listed within the index. This means that the AEX is now 17% higher at 530 points compared to a year ago. This is still far out of reach of the highest rate ever at 703.18 points which was reached at the beginning of this century.

The economic growth of the Netherlands as well as Europe could both positively influence the AEX. However it remains to be seen how in particular the heavyweights of the index will perform.
